Walking into the Dawn: Our Congregation at the Gower Sunrise Walk of Hope 2025
By Justin Taylor

On Sunday 22 June 2025, a handful of us from the congregation gathered in the early morning quiet at Vale Castle. The sky was still dark, and in the distance we could hear the low rumble of a thunderstorm. But as we began to walk, the clouds gave way and a beautiful sunrise broke through. By the time we reached the front, we were greeted by clear skies and the soft light of a new day.

We were there to take part in Guernsey Mind’s Sunrise Walk of Hope. Starting just before 4 a.m., we set off along the eastern coastline toward La Vallette Bathing Pools. There were more than 700 of us walking together, with dogs trotting happily alongside. There was a gentle rhythm to it all as we moved along in quiet conversation and shared purpose.

We walked to raise awareness around suicide, to support Guernsey Mind’s work in mental health, and to say with each step that you are not alone.

Some of us walked in memory of loved ones. Others walked for our own wellbeing. We all walked in hope.

When we arrived at the Bathing Pools, the sea was calm and the sky a gentle blue. Volunteers greeted us with warm drinks, croissants and kind words. The teams from Guernsey Mind, the Samaritans and the Sunflower Project were there too, offering support and a listening ear.

There was something deeply moving about standing together. Different people with different stories, united in a quiet act of care and compassion.

This year’s walk has already raised over £8,000 for local suicide prevention and mental health support. That money will make a real difference in the lives of people in our community.

If you’d like to join us next year or support Guernsey Mind’s work, have a look at their website. Taking part is simple, but deeply meaningful. It reminds us that even in the darkest moments we do not have to walk alone.

To anyone who is struggling, please reach out. And to everyone who walked beside us this year, thank you. You brought light with you.Gower Sunrise Walk 2025

Celebrating 80 Years of Liberation on Guernsey and the enduring link between Scotland and Guernsey

On Friday, 9th May 2025, at 9:30 am, St Andrew's in the Grange held a special and poignant service commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Guernsey. It was a morning filled with remembrance, gratitude, and a celebration of enduring connections, especially highlighting the profound link between Guernsey and Scotland.

During the Second World War, many Guernsey children were evacuated to Scotland, where they found shelter, care, and friendship during a tumultuous time. Our service honoured the bravery and resilience of these evacuees, acknowledging both the hardships endured and the lasting friendships forged through these experiences.

We were delighted to welcome visitors from around the world, reflecting the global impact and significance of this historical event. It was particularly touching to share stories of reunion, resilience, and the bonds of community that transcend geographical boundaries.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, both in person and online, to remember, reflect, and celebrate this important milestone in our shared history.

A Memorable Visit: His Excellency, Lieutenant Governor Richard Cripwell at St Andrew’s in the Grange

This past Sunday was a day of great significance for our community at St Andrew’s in the Grange. We were deeply honoured to welcome His Excellency, Lieutenant Governor Richard Cripwell, to our church. The visit was not just a formal occasion but a true reflection of the vibrant and diverse community that St Andrew’s has become.

The heart of the day was our Cafe Church service, where we gathered not just for worship, but for conversation and reflection on our role as agents of change in Guernsey. The theme resonated deeply with all who attended, sparking meaningful discussions about how our faith can inspire and empower us to make a difference in the world around us.

Lieutenant Governor Cripwell’s presence added a special significance to our gathering. His engagement with the congregation was warm and genuine, and it was clear that he appreciated the unique atmosphere of our Cafe Church. We discussed the ways in which St Andrew’s in the Grange can contribute to the broader community of Guernsey, exploring ideas on how we can be a force for good in society, fostering inclusivity, and supporting those in need.

One of the most profound moments of the day was when members of our Kenyan congregation shared their experiences. They spoke so beautifully about what Guernswelcoming and embracing diversity within our church.

As they shared their stories, there was a palpable sense of connection in the room—a shared understanding that, regardless of our backgrounds, we are all part of one family in Christ.

Their testimony was a touching affirmation of the work we do at St Andrew’s in the Grange to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

The visit of His Excellency was a reminder of the significant role that faith communities like ours play in the fabric of Guernsey. It was a day filled with inspiration, fellowship, and a renewed commitment to being agents of change in our community.

As we look to the future, let us carry forward the spirit of unity and purpose that was so evident on this special day. Together, we can continue to make a positive impact on Guernsey, grounded in the love and teachings of Christ.

We are grateful to Lieutenant Governor Cripwell for his visit and for the opportunity to share the heart of St Andrew’s in the Grange with him. And we are equally grateful to all our congregation members, especially our Kenyan brothers and sisters, for their contributions to our shared journey of faith.

May we continue to grow together in love and service, making St Andrew’s in the Grange not just a place of worship, but a beacon of hope and change for all who pass through its doors.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON OUR OFFERTORY PROCESS
We are making changes to how we handle our offertory to simplify and enhance this important act of worship and hospitality. Starting in August, we will no longer pass a collection plate during our services. Instead, you will have the opportunity to place any freewill offering envelopes or monetary donations in a designated collection area as you enter the sanctuary. This new method will allow everyone to contribute at their own pace as they arrive, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. We will provide more detailed information and guidance on this change in the coming weeks, so please stay tuned.

D-DAY 80th COMMEMORATION SERVICE
On the 2nd of June, our church will hold a special service to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This significant event in history will be marked by a poignant ceremony honouring the bravery and sacrifice of those who participated in the Normandy landings. The service will feature readings, hymns, and prayers dedicated to the veterans and fallen soldiers, reflecting on their courage and the enduring impact of their actions. We invite everyone to join us in this solemn tribute, as we remember and give thanks for the heroes who fought for freedom and peace on that pivotal day.
